oh wow. i HONESTLY thought it was just filters filters filters, but this looks like it would take over fucking 12 hours for like 500 frames, which is so much slower than normal animation. Normal animation could take like 2-4 hours just for like 600. thats an incredible demonstration of how to do this though

you can replace the expensive software with a free paint program like paint.net for drawing the keyframes, and FFMPEG for converting you videos to a PNG sequence and convert you PNG sequence to a video.

Is the smearing effect from motion blur? Would a higher shutter speed maybe reduce it or does it just have difficulty processing something changing positions in the frame?

It's not from motion blur! The tool he uses to generate the animation takes a keyframe he draws and tries to track it to the video he inputs. So if you move around or do stuff like blink (like he mentions in the video), the program kinda has to make sense of it and do its best to match that keyframe to all the frames. That's also why in the video he says you can fix those bugs by adding more keyframes - in essence giving the program more keyframes to work with to match to his movements.

@Addibro That's a good point, more frames sounds like it might do the trick. 48 PNGs per second might suck for file size but the effect is really cool. I'll do some experimenting with it for sure.

@Addibro but also, more frames equals more processing needed in total, so I could see why someone would go for the faster route of 24 FPS.

I guess if you have a lot more frames it would be easier for it. I assume it is the fast-moving that makes it difficult for the program, and if you have say 48 fps instead of 24, it would be able to capture twice the speed! Keep in mind, I'm just guessing here from how it seems like the programs and process works.
